How do I record student reading behaviours in a Running Record and score for accuracy and understanding?

Marie Clay's research and teachings on Running Records will provide the basis for this series of three workshops.
In this session we will address the key reasons for using Running Records, look at tools required, learn the conventions used to record reading behaviours and finally, address scoring to calculate accuracy, understanding, self-correction rate and retell ability.

What you'll learn

By the end of session one you will have:

  1. a deeper appreciation and understanding of the value of running records
  2. a more thorough knowledge of how to record and score a running record
  3. a deeper appreciation of the importance of sharing the results with the student

Target audience

All teachers who want to improve their knowledge and delivery in the recording and scoring of running records.

Interpreting a Running Record

In this session you will have an opportunity to practice taking a short running record from a recording of a child reading.
We will then discuss the conventions, calculate for accuracy and self-correction rate. I’ll also share with you a quick way to calculate retell (another indicator of understanding).

Errors and self-corrections will be analysed in order to determine what information (meaning, structure and visual) the child is utilising and neglecting and reading behaviours will be identified.

This information will be used to inform our teaching decisions which will be addressed in Session three.

What you'll learn

By the end of this session you will have:

  1. a better understanding of how to record reading behaviours
  2. You will have clarity around scoring for accuracy and self-correcting
  3. You will have a deeper understanding of how to analyse errors and self-corrections
  4. An appreciation of the importance of recording what the reading sounds like

Target audience

All teachers who want to develop proficiency in recording and analysing running records.

Using information from the Running Record to inform my teaching

In this session we will return to the running record from session 2.

All information gathered will be used to create a narrative about the child’s reading - useful strategies used by the child, strategies neglected, phrasing, fluency, expression and punctuation.

Next Steps Identified:

  • What do I continue to foster for this student?
  • What is my next key teaching goal?

What you'll learn

After this webinar:

  1. You will develop a broader awareness of the vast information available in a running record
  2. become more efficient at quickly identifying student strengths and challenges in reading
  3. You will feel better informed when making next teaching steps

Target audience

All teachers who have already engaged in Sessions 1 and 2 of this series.
All teachers who want to make better informed decisions about their next teaching steps in reading.
